What is a divan base?

A divan base is a specially-designed platform for your mattress, upholstered in your choice of fabric. Divan bases are great if you already have a mattress, and simply need a base for it. You can also choose a divan with a mattress as a complete set. They're practical, sturdy, easy to assemble and often cheaper than bed frames. Divan bases include castors (wheels) or fitted legs, an optional matching headboard and drawers or ottoman storage underneath.

How long does a divan base last?

A divan base can last many years. Of course, how long the base lasts depends on how frequently you use it, and how well you look after it. In line with advice from The Sleep Council and National Bed Federation, you should change your mattress and divan base every seven years. Replacing your divan base at the same time as your mattress will ensure that both remain in great condition, and that you get the high levels of comfort and support you need to sleep well.

What size divan base should I get?

Divan bases are available in a wide range of sizes. Before deciding on the size of your divan base, you should check the size of your mattress first. Your divan base will need to fit this. You should also consider who the divan is for and the amount of space available in your bedroom, too.

You can choose from the following sizes:

• Single base divan base - 90cm x 190cm (3' x 6'3")
• Small double divan base - 120cm x 190cm (4' x 6'3")
• Double divan base - 135cm x 190cm (4'6" x 6'3")
• King size divan base - 150cm x 200cm (5' x 6'6")
• Super king divan base - 180cm x 200cm (6' x 6'6")

Are divan beds better?

Divan beds are considered better than bed frames for four main reasons:

1. Since they're the same width and length as a mattress, divan beds take up less space. This means they're great for smaller bedrooms. It also means knee, toe and leg bashing injuries are minimal when compared with a bed frame!
2. Divan beds tend to be much cheaper than bed frames
3. You can customise your divan bed - so if you fancy changing your headboard in the future, you won't need to replace the entire bed to do so
4. Divan beds can come with built-in storage, which is great for keeping your bedroom tidy
